Join the Dartmouth Outing Club on Saturday, July 9 for a day of fun monitoring and maintaining along the boundaries of Appalachian Trail lands!



Volunteer to protect the boundaries of the land that helps to preserve the Appalachian Trail. This public land is the backbone of the largest natural corridor that remains east of the Mississippi River, creating a haven and migration path for humans and animals alike. Maintaining the boundaries of this land helps to protect it from encroachments such as motorized vehicles and timber theft.



Boundary work includes monitoring and maintenance. Monitoring means surveying, inspection, and collecting data while walking the property line. Maintenance means clearing a line of sight, painting over existing blazes, some brush cutting to keep the line visible, inspecting or replacing signs, and locating all the metal boundary monuments and witness trees, using GPS, maps and diagrams - like orienteering. Usually, boundary monitoring is simply a great day of seeing the trail from a very unique perspective.



Please be sure to wear long pants and sturdy boots. Bring plenty of water and snacks for the day, lunch, sunscreen, bug spray, a rain jacket and personal work gloves, as well as a mask and hand sanitizer! Tools and training will be provided.
